Phylogenetic classification of yeasts and related taxa within Pucciniomycotina

Abstract: Most small genera containing yeast species in the Pucciniomycotina (Basidiomycota, Fungi) are monophyletic, whereas larger genera including Bensingtonia, Rhodosporidium, Rhodotorula, Sporidiobolus and Sporobolomyces are polyphyletic. With the implementation of the “One Fungus = One Name” nomenclatural principle these polyphyletic genera were revised. Nine genera, namely Bannoa, Cystobasidiopsis, Colacogloea, Kondoa, Erythrobasidium, Rhodotorula, Sporobolomyces, Sakaguchia and Sterigmatomyces, were emended to i… Show more

“…Our results were in agreement with the phylogenetic analysis performed by Wang et al (2015) regarding the placement of a new species (Rhodotorula sp. AY165 strain CBS 12500, GenBank FN428968) in the genus Colacogloea (Fig.…”

“…Following the "one fungus = one name" principle, systematics of basidiomycetous yeasts was recently revised and unified with the classification of filamentous (often sexual) fungi (Liu et al 2015;Wang et al 2015). Also, the polyphyletic genera Cryptococcus and Rhodotorula were restricted to the lineages, where the type species belong.…”

“…Many basidiomycetous yeasts including Rhodosporidium are now included in other existing or new genera (Wang et al 2015). Accordingly, Rhodosporidium has been transferred to Rhodotorula and the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae is renamed as Rhodotorula kratochvilovae (Wang et al 2015).…”
