Phylogenetic position and biogeography of Hillebrandia sandwicensis (Begoniaceae): a rare Hawaiian relict

Abstract: The Begoniaceae consist of two genera, Begonia, with approximately 1400 species that are widely distributed in the tropics, and Hillebrandia, with one species that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and the only member of the family native to those islands. To help explain the history of Hillebrandia on the Hawaiian Archipelago, phylogenetic relationships of the Begoniaceae and the Cucurbitales were inferred using sequence data from 18S, rbcL, and ITS, and the minimal age of both Begonia and the Begoniaceae we… Show more

“…The split between the two genera of Begoniaceae, Begonia and Hillebrandia, is estimated as 29 (41-18) Myr old, roughly the age of the Hawaiian archipelago (ca 30 Myr), where Hillebrandia is endemic (Clement et al 2004 figure 2).…”

“…However, comparing the floristic checklists of Usina São José and Serra do Urubu, this assertion is not confirmed. It is noteworthy that some families such as Bignoniaceae and Polygalaceae are more diverse in lowland forests , unlike Gesneriaceae and Begoniaceae that are richer in middle and high elevation areas (Clement et al 2004;Perret et al 2013). Piperaceae is another example of the richness of the flora of Serra do Urubu being more pronounced in higher altitude forests than in lowland forests (Guedes 1998;Sacramento et al 2007;Soares Jr. et al 2008;Alves et al 2013).…”

“…O gênero Begonia possui aproximadamente 1.400 espécies e está amplamente distribuído nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais do mundo (Clement et al 2004;Forrest et al 2005;Forrest & Hollingsworth 2003), ausente apenas na Australásia (Heywood et al 2007). No Brasil, o gênero está representado por cerca de 200 espécies, distribuído em todas as formações vegetais, excetuando-se os manguezais.…”
