“…The continental Australian faunas segregate into the wet Western Australian forests and the Eastern Australian region, which forms a continuous belt of diversity from New South Wales to the Wet Tropics. The third clade shows two instances of Tasmania/New Zealand vicariance [31]: one for Ooperipatellus, and another including a few Tasmanian species and the New Zealand endemic genus Peripatoides.…”

“…The New Zealand Onychophora has been studied in detail (Gleeson 1996;Trewick 1998Trewick , 1999Trewick , 2000Allwood et al 2010). Two independent genera are recognised in New Zealand, Peripatoides and Ooperipatellus, both of which find their sister clade in Tasmania (Ooperipatellus is a transTasman genus), or Tasmania and/or mainland Australia (Peripatoides) (Gleeson et al 1998;Allwood et al 2010). The presence of deep genetic structure within Peripatoides has been interpreted to indicate an ancient origin with local survival of populations through climate cycles (Goldberg et al 2008).…”

“…Allozyme data revealed no close relatives among the limited number of New Zealand and Australian peripatus studied . A survey of Australasian Onychophora using mitochondrial DNA, that supported monophyly of the New Zealand Peripatoides, also included specimens from one location in Dunedin (Gleeson et al 1998).…”

“…At present, however, Dunedin peripatus have been represented in studies only by specimens from two sites (Caversham and Leith valleys), both of which are close to the city centre , Gleeson et al 1998. Before any interpretation of nationwide phylogeographic patterns can be made, a more complete understanding of local diversity and geographic range is required.…”
