Phylogenetic study of the genus Sternolophus Solier (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) based on adult morphology

Abstract: The phylogeny of the hydrophilid genus Sternolophus Solier, 1834 was examined in this study using 60 morphological adult characters, eight of them continuous and 52 discrete. The cladistic analysis resulted in a single most parsimonious tree with two major subclades corresponding, respectively, to species previously assigned to the subgenera Sternolophus s. str. Solier and Neosternolophus Zaitzev, although they are not re-instated. The species groups S. angolensis (Erichson, 1843) and S. solieri Castelnau, 184… Show more

“…Sternolophus. Nasserzadeh et al (2017) performed a cladistic analysis of water beetles of the genus Sternolophus Solier, including eight continuous characters. The terminals have single (average) values for the continuous characters, not ranges, which for this analysis obviates having to split terminals.…”

“…While Hydrophilid species can be found in nearly all parts of Iran, they have received scant research attention [2]. Some recent systematic research activities on Iranian aquatic Hydrophilidae include Nasserzadeh and Hosseinie [3,4]; Nasserzadeh, et al [5] and the Islamic Azad University team, led by Atamehr, et al [6]; Vafaei, et al [7]; Ostovan and Niakan [8,9]; Vafaei, et al [10]; Gentili, et al [2] The genus Laccobius Erichson 1837 is a large cosmopolitan genus with 130 Palaearctic species [11]. There are 19 Iranian reported species mainly pertaining to the subgenus Dimorpholaccobius [12] but no species are recorded from Khuzestan province.…”
