Four species of Gomesa (Gomesa flexuosa, Gomesa ranifera, Gomesa cornigera, and Gomesa riograndensis), a horticulturally important, albeit scarcely studied orchid genus, were investigated. Pollination biology was studied through fieldwork in Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil during two flowering seasons.Breeding systems were studied through controlled pollinations in cultivated plants. All studied species secrete floral oils through elaiophores and are exclusively pollinated by native, oil-collecting bees of the Centridini or Tapinotaspidini tribes. Pollinarium reconfiguration after withdrawal, a feature likely promoting cross-pollination, was recorded in G. cornigera and G. riograndensis. All studied species are pollinator-dependent and either predominantly or fully self-incompatible, that is, unable to set fruit following self-pollination. The used indexes of pollination efficiency consistently scored values below 1, indicating that in all studied species less than one flower is pollinated per pollinarium removed. Accordingly, pollen loss was high, ranging from 40% to 75%. Furthermore, inflorescences in natural populations displayed low fruit sets (below 13%). Gomesa flexuosa presented the highest values of pollinarium removal (36.24%) and deposition (15.34%).Significantly, this is the only studied species bearing a tabula infraestigmatica, a column swelling that bees hold to stabilize themselves while gathering the floral oils. Since pollinators were observed in all studied species spending considerable time (up to 3 min 46 s) and visiting several (up to 19) flowers, we propose that the observed low fruit set is the result of a combination of self-incompatibility, pollinator-mediated self-pollination, and pollen loss.

-(Species richness and endemism of species of Baptistonia (Orchidaceae, Oncidiinae) in Brazil). Species endemism and species richness are complementary concepts usually used in biodiversity evaluation. They can be useful tools for efficiently defining conservation areas. In the present study, they are applied to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, based on an orchid group endemic to this biome, the genus Baptistonia. The study of the species richness shows one very rich area (The Serra do Castelo, ES) and six rich areas. Three of these areas show an endemism index greater than 1. Eight areas, most important for biodiversity conservation, are proposed. Hierarchical relationships of endemism between nine phytogeographical areas are evaluated based on parsimony analysis of endemicity. This analysis confirms: (a) that two important endemism centers can be recognized in the southern ecological part of the Atlantic Forest, and (b) together with the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Baptistonia, that the Serra do Castelo appears to be the diversification center of the genus.

Floral elaiophores in Lockhartia Hook. (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae): their distribution, diversity and anatomy

All species of Lockhartia investigated have trichomal elaiophores on the adaxial surface of the labellum. Histochemical tests revealed the presence of lipoidal substances within the labellar trichomes. However, the degree of oil production and the distribution of trichomes differed between the three major groups of species found within the genus. All trichomes were unicellular and, in some species, of two distinct sizes, the larger being either capitate or apically branched. The trichomal cuticle was lamellate, and often appeared distended due to the subcuticular accumulation of oil. The labellar trichomes of the three species examined using transmission electron microscopy contained dense, intensely staining cytoplasm with apically located vacuoles. Oil-laden secretory vesicles fused with the plasmalemma and discharged their contents. Oil eventually accumulated between the cell wall and cuticle of the trichome and contained electron-transparent profiles or droplets. This condition is considered unique to Lockhartia among those species of elaiophore-bearing Oncidiinae studied to date.
