Phylogeny and phylogeography of arvicoline and lagurine voles of Mongolia

Abstract: In the present paper, we clarify the genetic structure and taxonomy of six vole species occurring in Mongolia including Microtus mongolicus, M. maximowiczii, M. limnophilus, Eolagurus luteus, E. przewalskii and Lagurus lagurus based on the sequence data of cytochrome b and three nuclear genes. All available genetic data indicate that M. mongolicus includes two divergent genetic lineages, which should be recognized as distinct species: M. mongolicus (East Mongolia, Khentii) and M. alpinus (Khangai and adjacent … Show more

“…Genetic distances among samples from European Russia, western Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia are nevertheless low (Bannikova et al 2019). Differences in the centromeric position of the largest autosome (and consequently in NFa) were associated with a subspecific division: NFa=60 in lagurus and aggressus; NFa=58 in altorum and abacanicus (Zima & Král 1984).…”

“…The yellow steppe lemming is a diurnal Arvicolinae rodent species of about 100 g body weight in either sex. Natural populations of this species inhabit steppes of Mongolia, North-Eastern China, Eastern Kazakhstan and Southern Altai in Russia 14 , 15 . The yellow steppe lemming potentially represents a very perspective wild-type rodent model for biomedical research including USVs 14 .…”

“…The yellow steppe lemming Eolagurus luteus is a diurnal medium-sized Arvicolinae rodent species [72,73] inhabiting steppe regions of Mongolia, North-Eastern China, Eastern Kazakhstan and Southern Altai (Russia) [74][75][76][77]. Yellow steppe lemming laboratory populations are maintained in scientific institutions and zoos [78][79][80].…”
