Phylogeny, environment and sexual communication across the Drosophila genus

Abstract: Social behaviour emerges from the local environment but is constrained by the animal's life history and its evolutionary lineage. In this perspective, we consider the genus Drosophila and provide an overview of how these constraints can shape how individuals interact. Our focus is restricted to visual and chemical signals and how their use varies across species during courtship -currently the only social behaviour well-studied across many Drosophila species. We broadly categorize species into four climatic gro… Show more

“…Several researchers have performed comparative studies across the phylogeny. For example, Jezovit et al [43] have used the Drosophila phylogeny to examine sexual behavior and communication across the family. Their analysis specifically examined habitat distribution, mating behavior in light and dark and chemical communication via CHCs.…”

“…The genus Drosophila provides an incredible array of phenotypic, evolutionary and ecological diversity [1][2][3][4][5]. Several thousand relatives of the model organism D. melanogaster inhabit all continents except Antarctica, and occur in almost every type of environment.…”

“…The Drosophila genus of insects is widespread throughout the world where groups of species have radiated into arid, temperate and tropical environments [16, 17]. The type of environment in which animals reside can correspond to differences in food availability, predation and species richness, among other things.…”
