Phylogeny of the Brachystomellidae (Collembola) — were the mandibles ancestrally absent and did they re‐appear in this family?

Abstract: Phylogeny of the Brachystomellidae (Collembola) -were the mandibles ancestrally absent and did they re-appear in this family? -Zoologica Scripta, 34, 305-312. A phylogenetic study was carried out on the family Brachystomellidae, which was found to be monophyletic. The genera Brachystomella and Folsomiella were polyphyletic. Folsomiella nothofagutalis was removed from Folsomiella and placed in Neorganella . The analysis showed that mandibles were ancestrally absent in this group and then re-appeared later in Pr… Show more

“…A phylogenetic tree for 16 genera of Brachystomellidae based on morphology was constructed by Najt et al (2005) who relied on 54 characters for 26 species of Brachystomellidae including the type species of the two genera rediagnosed here, Cassagnella alba and Rapoportella rhodosoma. The tree produced indicated monophyly of both genera but was not so clear for several non-Australian genera except Brachystomella.…”

“…1 in Najt & Weiner, 2001) but also included in the description (s per half tergum as 0,2,2/2,2,2,1,1) but without commenting as to whether this pattern is a generic character or not. This character is included as present in the species examined in genera Cassagnella and Brachystomellides in Najt et al (2005). The same formula is also present in the holotype of Brachystomella fungicola Womersley (P. Greenslade & J. Najt, unpubl.…”
