“…Although Eriksen (1993a) indicated that the tribe Moutabeeae is polyphyletic, he and van der Meijden (1988) both accepted that the sister of Eriandra is Diclidanthera Mart., one of the American genera. Eriksen (1993b) accepted the Moutabeeae as previously defined and had it as sister to Xanthophyllum Roxb., diverse throughout Malesia.…”

“…Regional treatments and recent molecular and morphological analyses of inter-and intra-family phylogeny, conducted by Eriksen (1993aEriksen ( , 1993b, Persson (2001), Monro (2003) and Forest et al (2007), have questioned the classification of Polygalaceae and sectional treatment of Polygala presented by Chodat (1896). Although these authors were unable to provide a fully resolved phylogeny for all Polygalaceae, they were able to highlight issues requiring further research, such as polyphyly in several genera such as Bredemeyera and Polygala.…”

“…Although these authors were unable to provide a fully resolved phylogeny for all Polygalaceae, they were able to highlight issues requiring further research, such as polyphyly in several genera such as Bredemeyera and Polygala. Apparently, the polyphyletic nature of Polygala is not surprising because several infrageneric groups have previously been recognised as independent genera (Eriksen 1993b). Four new genera have been proposed for North American Polygala, on the basis of phylogenetic data indicating four morphologically diagnosable clades that are more closely related to other genera than they are to the type group of Polygala (Abbott 2011).…”

“…Divisões infragenéricas têm sido propostas para o gênero (Bennet 1874; Chodat 1893; Paiva 1998), apoiadas na morfologia das flores, frutos, sementes e até na presença de nectários extraflorais. Eriksen (1993) utilizou dados morfológicos e anatômicos para sugerir que Polygala lato senso é polifilético. Entretanto, ressaltou a necessidade de um estudo mais amplo para o gênero.…”
