Phylogeographic analysis reveals northerly refugia for the riverine amphibianTriturus dobrogicus(Caudata: Salamandridae)

Abstract: We investigated the recent evolutionary history of the Danube crested newt, Triturus dobrogicus through reconstructions of: (1) the number and position of refugia at the last glacial maximum, (2) the role of major central European rivers in pattern of post‐glacial dispersal, and (3) the present‐day distribution pattern. We analysed sequences of mitochondrial DNA (ND2, 1065 bp) and six microsatellite loci in 363 T. dobrogicus individuals from 58 populations covering the range of the species. Our analyses sugges… Show more

“…In order to find out the origin of T. dobrogicus mtDNA, we compared haplotypes from the Znojmo region with haplotypes from the whole range of T. dobrogicus (Vörös, Mikulíček, Major, Recuero, & Arntzen, ). Haplotypes of T .…”

“…3,000‐km‐long hybrid zone coiled over central Europe, with B. bombina in the lowlands and B. variegata in hills and mountains. Strong biogeographical evidence exists for a scenario of species displacement, in which B. bombina superseded B. variegata over large parts of central Europe, until a stationary position was encountered at the transition of lowlands and mountain foothills with habitat‐dependent species performance as the driving force for hybrid zone movement (Arntzen, ; Vörös, Mikulíček, Major, Recuero, & Arntzen, ). Similarly, any parapatric species contact zone may travel the landscape.…”

“…Microsatellites have proven to have the potential in resolving recent (at least since the last glacial maxima) evolutionary history of amphibians (e.g. Zeisset and Beebee 2001;V€ or€ os et al 2016). Forward primers were labelled with fluorescent dyes (Fam-6, NED, PET or VIC), reverse primers contained a GTTT pigtail sequence on their 5 0 end to increase the accuracy of genotyping.…”
