Phylogeography and demographic history of the black kite Milvus migrans, a widespread raptor in Eurasia, Australia and Africa

Abstract: The black kite Milvus migrans, one of the most common raptor species, shows great flexibility as regards food resources and breeding sites. While black kite subspecies are found all over Eurasia, Africa and Australia, it has been poorly studied outside of Europe, with virtually nothing known about the phylogeny of populations in Asia, India, Africa or Australia. We analysed 85 published black kite nucleotide sequences and ca 660 new sequences from the ranges of the main black kite subspecies using a non-invasi… Show more

“…We found different sets of cytB haplotypes in Black Kites from Biysk (Altai Krai) and Black Kites from Kosh-Agach (Altai Republic). While in Kosh-Agach, the haplotypes were characteristic of M. m. lineatus , in the vicinity of Biysk, the haplotypes were characteristic for both subspecies M. m. migrans and M. m. lineatus, indicating a hybrid population from the intergradation zone between M. m. migrans and M. m. lineatus 36 , 42 . Lindholm and Forsten 43 were aimed at subspecies determination of Black Kites in Altai Krai and Altai Republic according to morphological features 16 .…”

“…Black kites have a unique ecological flexibility, which support their prosperity in various natural and human-influenced landscapes ( 8 , 9 ). The black-eared kite ( Milvus migrans lineatus ) is a subspecies of black kites that inhabits Asia ( 10 , 11 ) and recently, they were also reported across Western Europe ( 12 ). Black-eared kites breed in Asian temperate regions and migrate in winter to the Indian peninsula ( 11 , 13 , 14 ).…”
