Phylogeography of the freshwater red alga Sirodotia (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) in Brazil

Abstract: Summary Considering the lack of knowledge on genetic variation on members of the freshwater red algal of the order Batrachospermales in tropical regions, phylogeographic patterns in Sirodotia populations were investigated using two mitochondrial regions: the cox2‐3 spacer and partial cox1 gene (barcode). Individuals identified as Sirodotia delicatula were analyzed from 14 stream segments across its distribution in Brazil. Phylogenetic analyses based on the ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large … Show more

“…Besides being suitable for species identification, delimitation, and discovery (Leliart et al 2014), this marker also has been used in phylogeographic studies on Rhodophyta from Brazil (e.g. Zuccarello & West 2002;Paiano & Necchi Jr 2013;2017a;b;Ayres-Ostrock et al 2019). The top second marker is the plastidial rbcL, which has been employed together with other markers such as the COI in systematic studies to resolve taxonomic issues (e.g.…”

“…Third, we determined the population structure of M . macrospora in South America and East Asia by reconstructing a haplotype network based on the intergenic spacer between the cytochrome oxidase subunit 2 and subunit 3 genes ( cox2 ‐ 3 ), which is a widely used marker to evaluate interpopulation genetic variation in freshwater red algae (Necchi & Vis, 2005; Paiano & Necchi, 2013, 2017). Fourth, we measured pH and nutrient level of freshwater bodies around Taiwan where M .…”

“…Second, to identify the main climatic components that differ between the alga's native range in South America and its non-native range in Taiwan, we compared the climates of the two geographic regions. Third, we determined the population structure of M. macrospora in South America and East Asia by reconstructing a haplotype network based on the intergenic spacer between the cytochrome oxidase subunit 2 and subunit 3 genes (cox2-3), which is a widely used marker to evaluate interpopulation genetic variation in freshwater red algae (Necchi & Vis, 2005;Paiano & Necchi, 2013, 2017. Fourth, we measured pH and nutrient level of freshwater bodies around Taiwan where M. macrospora has been found.…”
