Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior From 6 to 11 Years

Abstract: Physical activity (PA) is presumed to decline during childhood and adolescence, but only few long-term studies about PA development during this period of life exist. We assessed PA and sedentary behavior (SB) over a 5-year period to gain a better understanding of the extent of change in activity and potential influencing factors. METHODS: PA and SB of 600 children from the Childhood Obesity Project were objectively measured with the SenseWear Armband 2 at the ages of 6, 8, and 11 years, resulting in 1254 obser… Show more

“…In the present study, we have not found decreasing in MVPA with time signi cantly. This is different from the previous study, which found that MVPA decreasing with age in children and adolescent [25][26][27].Maybe, this is the reason for overweight/obesity increasing after a 12-month follow-up. Nevertheless, two large-scale questionnaire investigation studies have shown that the proportion of students met the MVPA guideline from 29.9% in 2016 to 34% in 2017 in China [8,9].…”

“…Our results manifested that boys were more physically active than girls, this has been identi ed by previous studies [28,29]. Meanwhile, children were more active than adolescents which consistent with many studies that MVPA was decreasing with age [27,30]. In the current study, this phenomenon can be explained partially by the attitude toward PA that children have a more positive attitude than adolescents, and attitude to PA was a mean contributor for the MVPA level.…”

“…Based on the review inclusion criteria and data availability, 521 studies were further excluded. Thus, 52 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the quantitative analysis representing a total sample of 22,091 children and adolescents (Figure ; PRISMA flow diagram). A subset of 31 studies with exactly 1 year of follow‐up data were included in the meta‐analysis.…”

“…When participants reported each EMA prompt, their response time (in 24 h), day of the week (weekends/weekdays), and the time difference (in minutes) between mothers' and child's EMA prompt for the same scheduled window were calculated. These basic demographic and temporal factors were included in the analysis as covariates based on their potential impact on daily physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns [30,[33][34][35]. Children also reported their social context using a multiple selection question during each EMA prompt ("Who were you with just before the phone went off?").…”
