Physical Activity Levels and Psychological Well-Being during COVID-19 Lockdown among University Students and Employees

Abstract: During the lockdown for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), entire populations were instructed to live in home confinement. We investigated the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on the physical activity (PA) and mental health of students and employees in a Colombian University. A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online survey during the first isolation. A total of 431 respondents (192 males) aged 18–60 years old (28.1 ± 11.1 years) participated. “…The results showed significant reductions in vigorous and moderate intensity PA, walking, and steps counts during the early-COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, incorporating IPAQ-SF. Furthermore, a study by De La Rosa et al [ 43 ] investigated the impact of lockdown on PA and psychological well-being in Columbian students. The analysis showed a significant decrease in total PA during lockdown for both male and female students, but the effect varied between age categories and PA levels.…”

“…Without field studies for direct case detection coincident with ecological studies, it is impossible to identify the full swath of variables that define transmission in specific contexts. Finally, this study was during the pandemic lockdown in Colombia and epidemiological behavior might not be indicative of “normal” [ 65 , 66 ] and declining cases were reported in some places [ 67 , 68 ] as well as a COVID-related potential for misdiagnosis [ 69 , 70 ]. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic arrested much activity in Colombia in the middle of sampling time.…”

“…Previous studies have compared the PA levels before and after the COVID-19 lockdown, which indicated, for the vast majority, a reduction in PA along with an increase in sedentary behavior [ 27 ]. Other studies have shown that these trends have a deleterious effect on individual health including immune dysfunction and deterioration in mental health [ 28 ].…”
