Physical Activity, Tinnitus Severity, and Improved Quality of Life

Abstract: Physical activity had a small but statistically significant correlation with QOL and tinnitus distress. Our results suggest that physical activity may be a management strategy for those with tinnitus, but further testing is necessary to assess the relationship between physical activity and tinnitus severity.

“…A lack of effective coping strategies may lead to the development of distress factors and a decreased QOL. Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with lower levels of tinnitus severity [ 9 ]. However, the neuronal differences underlying this association have not been investigated.…”

“…We also suspected that these alterations in response patterns may be related to physical activity. Our recent survey study [ 9 ] aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity and tinnitus severity. Data from 1030 individuals with tinnitus, with a completion rate of approximately 60%, were collected, which included measures of tinnitus severity, physical activity, and quality of life.…”

“…25 Other authors have noted that higher levels of physical activity were significantly associated with lower levels of tinnitus severity, improved health and quality of life. 26 In this research, increased physical activity was strongly correlated with increased sense of control of tinnitus perception because exercises can distract patients, making them unaware of tinnitus. 26 Regarding cigarettes, 155 (20.89%) sample subjects reported smoking and from these 143 (92.25%) said that smoking would not change tinnitus perception.…”

These findings differ from previous research conducted with adult smokers and nonsmokers, where it was noted that the smoking group had more complaints of tinnitus.…”
