Physical and Biological Satellite Observations of the Northwest African Upwelling: Spatial Extent and Dynamics

Abstract: The region along the NorthWest African coast (20 • N to 36 • N and 4 • W to 19 • W) is characterized by a persistent and variable upwelling phenomenon almost all year round. In this article, the upwelling features are investigated using an algorithm dedicated to delimit the upwelling area from thermal and biological satellite observations. This method has been developed specifically for sea-surface temperature (SST) images, since they present a high latitudinal variation, which is not present in chlorophyll-a … Show more

“…We chose U ¼ ½32 N; 17 W ½22 N; 27 W (blue box in Fig. 4), which lies off the Canary Current, a region characterized by high eddy kinetic energy 43 and mesoscale eddies that frequently span off the islands. Within the North Atlantic ocean, we define a domain of advection D (green box in Fig.…”

“…In a related work, El Abidi and Minaoui [13] and El Aouni et al [14] proposed different methods to identify the upwelling along the Atlantic coast of Morocco based on the biological observation. El Aouni et al [1] and El Abidi et al [15] developed different methodologies to delineate and extract the upwelling region using the satellite observation. In fact, the method proposed in [1] was used to study the upwelling physical and biological variabilities of the northwest African region.…”

“…T HE Atlantic coastline of north Africa is characterized by the presence of the upwelling phenomenon almost all around the year. This phenomenon can be identified by seasonally variable cold and nutrient-rich water [1]. Thus, the automatic identification and detection of this phenomenon is of fundamental importance in the study of productivity enhancement [2], [3] and associated fish management [4].…”
