Physical and Emotional Sibling Violence in the Time of COVID -19

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted families in a variety of ways with much being written on the potential impact of sheltering in place and quarantining on intimate partner violence and parent-to-child abuse. One area that has received scant attention is that of physical and emotional sibling violence. While physical and emotional sibling violence is a predominant form of family violence, discussion of violence between siblings in the time of COVID-19 has not received the attention it warrants. “…Moreover, it is important to consider that data collection took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and thus frequencies may be inaccurate. Scholars have argued that the risk for engaging in sibling aggression in the time of COVID-19 has been particularly exacerbated ( Perkins et al, 2021 ). Contrary to this, data assessing peer and cyber bullying prevalence rates during the pandemic has shown that involvement in all forms of bullying were reported at far lower rates during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic, except for cyber bullying ( Vaillancourt et al, 2021 ).…”

“…A field that has received little attention is physical and emotional violence between siblings. A study conducted by Perkins et al (2021) reveals an increase in this type of violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has not received the attention required. It should be noted that in Latin America and the Caribbean, the precarious situation has reduced the opportunities to develop protections during the pandemic and this suggests that the rise in violence against children and adolescents is even higher (CEPAL, 2020;OMS, 2020).…”

“…During the Great Recession, the incidence of IPV was twice as likely for women experiencing economic hardship compared to women who were not experiencing economic hardship (Schneider et al, 2016). The COVID-19 pandemic has been linked to worsening of other forms of family violence such as child maltreatment (Lee, Ward, Lee et al, 2022; Rodriguez et al, 2021), elder abuse (Makaroun et al, 2020), and sibling violence (Perkins et al, 2022). Early cross-sectional research during the pandemic suggested that 17% of victims of IPV reported that victimization worsened since the pandemic began, 54% conveyed no change, and, notably, 30% who were surveyed indicated victimization had lessened (Jetelina et al, 2020).…”
