Physical and mental health conditions account for variability in awareness of age-related changes

Abstract: BackgroundThe concept of Awareness of Age-Related Changes captures people’s perceptions of the positive (AARC-gains) and negative (AARC-losses) age-related changes they experience in several life domains, including their health. We investigated the cross-sectional associations of number and type of physical and mental health conditions with AARC-gains and AARC-losses.MethodsThe sample comprised 3,786 middle-aged and older adults (mean age = 67.04 years; SD = 6.88) participating to the UK PROTECT study. We used… Show more

“…On average, dementia caregivers have more chronic health conditions than non-dementia caregivers (Alzheimer's Association, 2022) and non-caregivers (Janson et al, 2022), and health conditions (Sabatini et al, 2022(Sabatini et al, , 2023b, especially the onset of new diagnoses (Rupprecht et al, 2022), are associated with poorer VoA. As such, we were surprised that the caregivers in our sample did not experience changes in FA when they experienced changes to the number of health conditions they had.…”

“…In Germany, some early-to-late middle-aged adults have expressed significant over-time dissatisfaction with their social ties and lives in general [87]. Ownhealth negativity procured similar sentiments over age-related losses and gains among middle-aged Italians [88]. Physical symptoms of COVID-19 that often disrupt home, work, and school life can also linger for more than one year [89].…”

“…Although O'Brien et al (2021) explored AARC-gains and AARC-losses in relation to cognitive interference and stress in a sample of people aged 21-78, the associations between AARC-gains and AARC-losses and other developmental correlates have so far been explored among individuals aged 40+. Lower AARC-gains and higher AARC-losses tend to be associated with poorer self-rated health, less functional ability, more negative medical assessments, greater frailty, poorer self-reported sleep, and greater pain (Brothers et al, 2021;Sabatini, Silarova, et al, 2020;Sabatini, Turner, et al, 2023;Sabatini, Ukoumunne, et al, 2020;. Moreover, higher AARC-losses are associated with poorer performance on cognitive tasks assessing memory, perceptual speed, knowledge, and reasoning, although effects are either small or negligible (Sabatini, Ukoumunne, Ballard, Collins, Anstey, et al, 2021;Voelkner & Caskie, 2023).…”
