Physical and psychological paths toward less severe fibromyalgia: A structural equation model

Abstract: Resilience and catastrophizing, through distress, are related to fibromyalgia severity.  Active lifestyle, directly and through fitness and fatigue, is related to fibromyalgia severity.  Declarative memory (objectively measured) is not related to fibromyalgia severity.  Subjective and objective assessments of fitness provide complementary information in fibromyalgia.

“…Thus, additional research is needed to evaluate a larger number of both positive and negative psychological factors in the same sample to determine which plays the most important roles and determine if as a group these factors can explain more mediation effects than single or subsets of these variables. According to this point, two recent studies in people with fibromyalgia have shown how high resilience and low pain catastrophizing reduced fibromyalgia severity via low distress [ 67 ] and how high cognitive fusion and high pain catastrophizing increased functional limitations via fibromyalgia symptoms (depression, pain, and physical fatigue) [ 68 ].…”

“…Despite the fact that in recent years some studies have explored the complex relationships between the different aspects and symptoms of the disease [14,23], it is still necessary to deepen both the explanatory mechanisms that affect its severity and the most appropriate treatments to minimize its main symptoms. According to clinical practice guidelines, there are various forms of treatment for FM, from patient education, drug treatment, physical therapy, and psychology, to some alternative therapies such as yoga, taichi, or acupuncture [24].…”

“…In fibromyalgia, subjective well-being is known to be important for better health [4][5][6][7]. Identifying determinants of subjective well-being that can be altered, such as physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and physical fitness, represents potential areas to optimize treatment regimens [7,44].…”

“…Subjective well-being is people's evaluation of their own life on affective (positive and negative) and cognitive (satisfaction with life) dimensions [2,3]. In particular, positive affect is indicated to be a key determinant of adaptation to fibromyalgia [4][5][6][7]. Finding modifiable factors that are related to subjective wellbeing would be valuable for improving intervention programs in fibromyalgia.…”
