Physical exercise seems to have a promising effect on numerous variables related to the recovery of drug-dependent patients. However, some contradictions are found in the literature. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis in order to identify the effect of physical exercise on mental disorders, quality of life, abstinence, and craving, and make a comparison of the effect of exercise depending on the type of program. A search for articles was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies were selected that measured the acute effects or long-term effect (≥2 weeks) of exercise in patients who met criteria for alcohol use disorders or substance use disorders. A total of 59 studies were included. An effect of exercise on mental disorders (standardized mean differences (SMD) = 0.66 (confidence interval (CI): 0.46, 0.86); z = 6.50; p < 0.00001) and quality of life (SMD = 0.69 (95% CI: 0.53, 0.84); z = 8.65; p < 0.00001) was identified. Subgroup analysis revealed an effect of exercise in craving (SMD = 0.80 (CI: 0.07, 1.53); z = 2.15, p = 0.03), stress (SMD = 1.11 (CI: 0.31, 1.91); = 2.73; p = 0.006), anxiety (SMD = 0.50 (CI: 0.16, 0.84); z = 2.88; p = 0.004) and depression (SMD = 0.63 (CI: 0.34, 0.92); z = 4.31; p < 0.0001). Body–mind activities and programs based on improving physical conditions produced similar results in mental disorders and quality of life. Available evidence indicates that physical exercise, both body–mind and physical fitness programs, can be effective in improving mental disorders, craving, and quality of life in drug-dependent patients.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex condition that involves the induction of molecular and physiological alterations by the use and abuse of illicit substances. The prevalence of illicit drug use has caused this disorder to grow exponentially over the past 5 years (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2020). To date, there are several FDA-approved pharmacological treatments for substances that may cause dependency, such as heroin, morphine, alcohol, and nicotine, directed to the attenuation of drug craving, and increase time to relapse. Known as medication-assisted treatment, such FDA-approved pharmaceutical interventions can be used to increase the effectiveness of other substance abuse treatments, including the use of buprenorphine (commonly used in opioid use disorder, OUD).Buprenorphine works as a partial agonist that binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, allowing a partial activation of the receptor when it is activated with opioids, and thus reducing the rewarding effects (James & Williams, 2020). Another FDA-approved treatment for OUD is naloxone, a known opioid receptor antagonist that reduces activation and prevents other endogenous ligands to bind to that receptor (Becker & Chartoff, 2019;James & Williams, 2020). The present study examined latent class cluster group patterns based on measures of depression and anxiety symptom severity and alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hypothesized correlates with latent class cluster groups including quarantining, self-isolation, suicidal ideations, sitting hours per day, and physical activity (vigorous intensity exercise in minutes per week) were examined. The delimited participant sample consisted of 606 university young adults 18 to 25 years of age ( M = 21.24 ± 1.62). Latent cluster analysis (LCA) modeled patterns of depression and anxiety symptom severity and alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between group analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis were used to examine relationships between latent class clusters and correlates including quarantining, self-isolation, suicidal ideations, sitting hours per day, and physical activity (vigorous intensity exercise in minutes per week). LCA results showed that six latent cluster groups provided optimal model-to-date fit based on mental health symptom severity and alcohol consumption ( L 2 = 56.31, BIC = 5012.79, AIC = 4849.74, and the bootstrap L 2 p -value = .88; Entropy R 2 = .89). Identified latent class clusters were as follows: cluster one = moderate anxiety and depression severity and moderate alcohol consumption ( n = 156; 25.7%); cluster two = high mental health severity and alcohol consumption ( n = 133; 21.9%); cluster three = low mental health symptoms and moderate alcohol consumption ( n = 105; 17.3%); cluster four = lowest mental health severity and alcohol consumption ( n = 95; 15.7%); cluster five = moderate depression severity, low anxiety severity, and low alcohol consumptions ( n = 74; 12.2%); and cluster six = moderate anxiety severity, low depression severity, and low alcohol consumption ( n = 43; 7.1%). Multinomial logistic regression analysis results found that quarantining, self-isolation, suicidal ideations, sedentary behavior, and physical activity were differentially associated with cluster group membership. Findings from this study demonstrate associations between COVID-19 public health restrictions, suicidal ideations, and declines in mental health and increases in alcohol consumption among young adult university students.

Abstract: We saw an effect on drinking habits after running in both groups. However, no additional effect was seen when compared with the control group. A drop in the training frequency during the intervention might have resulted in an insignificant training stimulus.
