Physical health in children with neurodevelopmental disorders

Abstract: With increasing numbers of children being diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) attention has been drawn to these children's physical health. We aimed to identify the prevalence of defined physical problems (epilepsy, migraine, asthma, cancer, diabetes, psoriasis, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, diarrhea, constipation, daytime enuresis, encopresis) in a nationwide population of 9-and 12-year-old twins subdivided into those with and without indications of NDDs. Parents of 28,058 twins particip… Show more

“…The proposal of a direct gut-brain relationship contributing to the pathophysiology, commonly features in literature, in particular in reference to schizophrenia and ASD [1,12,16,[18][19][20][21]. Theories often describe autoimmunity and inflammation as potentially playing a role [11,22,23].…”

“…It is estimated that 20-40% of children with urinary incontinence fit criteria for a psychiatric disorder [232]. In a twin study that examined rates of other health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including ASD, ADHD, or learning disability, daytime enuresis (daytime incontinence) was found to be significantly more common in individuals with a diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorder than in controls [233]. In children with a diagnosis of autism and learning disability, the prevalence of daytime enuresis was 14 times greater, reaching rates of nearly 50% [233].…”

“…We used freely available GWAS summary statistics from predominantly European ancestry populations on physical health problems that have been previously reported as being associated with ADHD (68). The outcomes included cardiometabolic(1519), neurological(20), immunological diseases(18, 21–24) and lung cancer (25) (detailed overview in Table 1 and Table S2), because of the strong link between ADHD and smoking behaviour.…”

“…ADHD is associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates(4) and a broad range of physical health problems. These include metabolic problems (including obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus), cardiovascular problems (such as hypertension(5) and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD)), neurological problems (including epilepsy and migraine(6)), allergic/inflammatory disorders (including asthma (68), allergic rhinitis and coeliac disease)(6) and some types of cancer.…”
