Numerous researches on landslides have been carried out by many researches. However, studies on soil physical properties related to landslides potential in volcanic area are still rare. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of soil physical properties on landslides potential. To collect the soil sample, sampling area method was applied. The soil type used in this study was the residual soil. The values of clay liquid limit, plasticity limit, plasticity index, water content, COLE index were used to measure the physical properties of the soil. Organic material was used as the supporting data. The results showed that the soil in the command area showed high value of clay which exceeded 50%. Such high level conditions in each profile affect the liquid limit; plasticity limit, plasticity index, water content, COLE index and organic material. Based on the results, it can be concluded that residual soils with significantly high clay values illustrated the risk of landslide fields formation in Bompon sub-watershed. The clay soil layer was the controlled factor of soil movement.

Sidoarjo mud volcano (Lusi) is one of the most challenging problems regarding to the compressibility of fine grained soils in Indonesia. Understanding about compressibility behavior is essential to construct appropriate remediation program for this problems. Consolidation test has been conducted to investigate the compressibility behavior of Lusi mud volcano. In this study, the laboratory test result is compared with estimated value derived from several empirical equations. A simple equation can be used to predict e-log σ' curve very well by using the correlation between initial void ratio (e0) and void ratio corresponding to unit pressure (e1); and correlation between compression index (Cc) and physical properties of soils, such as liquid limit (wL) or natural water content (wn). This equation predict better than other available equations in literature when compared with laboratory test of Lusi mud volcano.

Mud contains little organic matter but has the potential for microbial electricigens (electrogenic) (4.5 - 6.6 mV) this is because the mud comes from bursts from below the earth's surface containing magma and hydrothermal fluids. Therefore, this study aims to learn the addition of Sidoarjo mud (a source of microbes as a biocatalyst) and molasses into microbial fuel cells technology for external resistance variations in generating bioelectricity. Referring to this goal, variations in molasses (2.5, 5.0 and 10 % w/w) and external resistance (1, 10, 100, 1,000 and 5,100 kΩ) were carried out. The stages in this study include starter preparation by assembling MFCs using carbon electrodes connected to electronic devices. Furthermore, the mixture of mud and molasses was put into the MFCs by immersing the anode while the cathode was on top of the mud. After that, measuring the electricity potential (voltage and power density) on various external resistances and molasses. The optimum results for the electric voltage and the best power density were obtained when using an external resistance of 1 kΩ and adding 2.5 % molasses with, respectively 210.25 mV/m2 and 38.91 mW/m2 (electric current 51.75 mA/m2). Based on the results of the SEM-EDX analysis for carbon electrodes, it was found that there was a change in composition from before the process to 9 weeks of running time, where the previous carbon content was 97.27 to 0.67 %. In addition, there were other contents such as sulfur, silica, ferrum, phosphorus and other elements caused by bacterial metabolism in biochemical degradation of organic components.
