Physical Stability Studies of Semi-Solid Formulations from Natural Compounds Loaded with Chitosan Microspheres

Abstract: A chitosan-based hydrophilic system containing an olive leaf extract was designed and its antioxidant capacity was evaluated. Encapsulation of olive leaf extract in chitosan microspheres was carried out by a spray-drying process. The particles obtained with this technique were found to be spherical and had a positive surface charge, which is an indicator of mucoadhesiveness. FTIR and X-ray diffraction results showed that there are not specific interactions of polyphenolic compounds in olive leaf extract with t… Show more

“…In addition, the intensity of the chitosan peak at 8.1° increased with addition of CNC, which indicates that the presence of CNC increases the ordering of chitosan chains upon drying . Incorporating GPE did not affect crystalline structures of the films, which agrees with previous finding that incorporation of the olive leaf extract into the chitosan microspheres did not affect the amorphous structure …”

“…Wide varieties of industries use chitosan for different applications. Chitosan has potential for drug-delivery [3,13,14] or as a source of biomaterials to generate nanofibers or nanoparticles [15,16,17]. This review describes the mode of action of chitosan in fungi and plants.…”

“…Chitin exhibits low solubility and it is quite difficult to handle. On the contrary, chitosan is soluble in acid aqueous solutions and can easily produce different conformations such as micro, nano and milli particles, films, scaffolds and fibres among others [ 20 ]. Oligosaccharides and some chitin and chitosan derivatives are water soluble at physiological pH and exhibit improved or even new properties.…”
