Physico-chemical and macrobenthic faunal characteristics of Kuramo Water, Lagos, southern Nigeria

Abstract: A five-month study in 2001 of an enclosed lagoon, Kuramo Water in southern Nigeria, exposed to urban perturbation describes its physical, chemical and macrobenthic invertebrate characteristics. Of the 16 physical and chemical conditions studied at four sites within the bank-root biotope, only BOD and TDS content were significantly different between sites. The elevated level of these perturbation indicators could be related to the raw and treated domestic sewage released directly into Kuramo Water from point an… Show more

“…Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels of 0.25 to 6.39 mg/L in this study were similar to 1.20 mg/L to 9.40 mg/L reported by Edokpayi et al [27] in Ibiekuma River and Ibuya River in Old national park, Sepeteri. The lowest value was observed in Station 1 in November and the highest was also recorded in Station 1 in the month March.…”

“…Aladese and Ariyo (2017) demonstrated a high correlation between indiscriminate disposal of human wastes and high microbial population in aquatic environments. Their assertion and our findings in this study further agree with other reported studies in the past (Edokayi, 2004;Onyema, 2011;Olorode et al, 2015).…”

“…and Nais spp. have been reported in polluted tropical waters (Victor and Ogbeibu, 1985;Atobatele et al, 2005) and prefer soft sediments rich in organic content (Crothers, 1997;Edokpayi et al, 2004), a feature characteristic of the study sites.…”

“…Along the approximately 853 km coastline of Nigeria there are estuaries and lagoons receiving effluents from many rivers and creeks most of which are routes for the introduction of pollutants. Benthological studies in Nigeria include Ajao and Fagade (1990), Brown (2000) and Edokpayi et al (2004), who have focused majorly on general species composition and distribution.…”
