Physico-Chemical Characterization and Speciation of Sulphur of Nigerian Coal Samples

Abstract: Studies of physico-chemical characterization, and chemical speciation of sulphur of seven Nigerian coal samples have been undertaken. The seven coal samples originated from South-east, North-central and North-east of Nigeria where there are proven economic deposits of this mineral. Moisture content, bulk density, percentage ash and loss of mass on ignition of all the coal samples were determined. The ultimate analysis of the raw coal, the corresponding coal ash as well as sulphur content of all samples were ca… Show more

“…In the literatures, the presence of some elements has been related to the geochemical parameters of environment in which bitumen was produced, i.e. the high vanadium content of the bitumen suggested a high degree of maturity of the bitumen source, and vanadium/(vanadium + nickel) ratio suggested oxidizing conditions during the depositional of the bitumen from its source (Adekola et al 2012). …”

“…They analysed these samples for ash, C, O, H, N, S, carbonates and silicates and found that the values of C, H, N and O were approximately similar in the coal and the bacterial biomass. The physico-chemical characterization of Nigerian coal samples have been determined and found to contain major elements like Ca, Fe and S and some minor elements like K, Zn, Ni, Sc, Ti and Zr (Adekola et al, 2012). Similarly, Nyakuma (2015) studied physico-chemical properties of three low rank Nigerian coals and determined the elemental composition, proximate analysis, mineral matter and calorific values of the coal.…”

“…Inorganically, coal contains different kinds of ash-forming substances, dispersed in the coal matrix. On the other hand, the organic part is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, with a smaller amount of nitrogen and sulfur (Adekola et al, 2012). It is currently ful lling about 30% and 42% of the global energy and electricity requirements, respectively, and is still predicted to perfume an active role in the ful llment of the global energy requirement for the upcoming 2 to 3 decades (Xia et al, 2015).…”
