Physico‐chemical factors influencing spore germination in cyanobacterium Fischerella muscicola

Abstract: Spore (akinete) formation in the heterocystous and branched filamentous cyanobacterium Fischerella muscicola involves a significant increase in cell size and formation of several endospores in each of the cells. In present study, the physico-chemical factors (pH, light sources, nutrient deficiency, nitrogen sources, carbon sources, and growth hormones) affecting the germination of spores of F. muscicola were examined. Increase in spore germination frequency was detected above pH 8 with maximum germination (46.… Show more

“…1 ⃝). Moreover, the germination rate increased with decreasing H + concentration, with the maximum germination rate at pH 9 (68%), and the germination rate decreased rapidly (<50%) at pH 10 and above (experimental condition: temperature 25 • C, light 50 µmol m −2 s −1 , N-free chu medium, pH 5-10) [65]. In the range of pH 6-11, Anabaenopsis arnoldii akinetes had the highest germination rate at pH 7 (64%) and maintained a high germination rate up to pH 8.5 (58%).…”
