Physicochemical and antibacterial properties of polyurethane coatings modified by ZnO

Abstract: The synthesis of polyurethane nanocomposite coatings containing 1% to 5% suitably dispersed ZnO by 1-stage polyaddition process in the bulk using 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate), poly(ε-caprolactone)diol, and 1,4-butanediol was performed. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra confirmed the structure of obtained polyurethanes. Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analyzer methods showed randomly distributed ZnO in a polyurethane matrix. The differential scanning calorimetr… Show more

“…The SEM–EDX spectra of the membrane surfaces with the lower isocyanate index are shown in Figure . The spectra of unmodified (PU‐0) polyurethanes exhibited only C and O bands as experienced in other studies . The spectra of QAS‐added membranes include an additional band at 0.40 keV, between carbon and oxygen bands, assigned to quaternary nitrogen atom …”

“…In addition, the peak at 3400 and 1214 cm −1 significantly decreases, the peak at 2264 and 1010 cm −1 almost completely disappears, and the characteristic peak of C═O in carbamate appears at 1719 cm −1 . These results suggest that the hydroxyl group in PR may completely react with the –NCO group …”

“…These results suggest that the hydroxyl group in PR may completely react with the -NCO group. 16 The mechanism for improving mechanical properties can be explained in two ways. The toughening mechanism is illustrated in Figure 4.…”

“…Carbon attachment to the oxygen and nitrogen atoms was observed between 60 and 70 ppm. Meanwhile, the urethane carbonyl and CH═N carbons were detected at around 160–180 ppm 51–53 . The hard segment carbon adjacent to the urethane linkage was observed at 33 ppm, whereas peaks at 64 ppm were assigned to carbon‐bonded oxygen (CO) adjacent to the urethane linkage and amine groups 24…”
