Physicochemical and Microbial Assessment of Roadside Food and Water Samples in Lagos and Environs

Abstract: This study assessed the quality street vended food and water as well as the effects of environmental pollution on them in 3 local government areas (LGAs) representing low, medium and high income areas in Lagos State in coparison to samples collected from 5 locations in Ogun, Oyo and Osun States being previously established as places of origin of most migrants to Lagos. “…Lead level in pregnant women is associated with miscarriages, abortions, and stillbirths. Excessive amount of lead in the body can cause disorder in the metabolism of other microelements such as iron, copper, and zinc which has a negative effect on the function of health and kidney [25]. Since lead easily crosses the placenta and the fetal blood-brain barrier [25], it can irreversibly affect cognitive development [26,27].…”

“…Roasted plantain was seen to be high in various levels of contaminants such as heavy metals, which were as a result of high traffic. Vehicular emission is a major source of pollution of most ready-to-eat street vended foods [31,32]. The results obtained from this study implicated the presence of high Cadmium within the operating environment of Makoba, Elekahia and the Rivers State University gate during the raining season.…”

“…In the roasted plantain in the low income area had the highest level of contaminants such as Pb, Cd, Zn and Fe. The lowest value was in the high income area (Opeolu et al, 2010) . Lead levels ranged between 0.2-1.25 μg/g with the highest value observed at the low income, high population density and high traffic area.…”
