Physicochemical and microbiological profile of the potable water of Eastern Himalayan State Sikkim: An Indication of Severe Fecal Contamination and Immediate Health Risk

Abstract: Increasing population, rapid urbanization and climate change have immensely affected the freshwater sources around the world. The continuous decline in the number of natural potable water sources raises serious concern about the overall health of the human population.Developing countries are the most affected in this regard due to lack of proper hygienic maintenance protocols. Sikkim an Eastern Himalayan state with mountains as predominant topological features, harbors several natural spring water (SW). These … Show more

“…For household water samples, 10 villages were selected from each district, with a total of 40 villages, and water samples from 5 households of each village were collected (10 × 4 × 5 = 200 samples). Springs were selected based on the altitude, minimum number of households dependent on a spring and perennial nature (19) (Supplementary Table S2). Different Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) or village level blocks were selected for the current study on the basis of recent reports of water-borne disease incidence (6).…”

“…(2018). This increased population is arising competition for freshwater in urban, agricultural, and industrial uses which influence pressure on rural and urban areas (Ashish Kumar Singh et al (2018). By considering all these problems, we need to utilize the other available sources of water.…”

“…(2018). This increased population is arising competition for freshwater in urban, agricultural and industrial uses which influence pressure on rural and urban areas (Ashish Kumar Singh et al (2018). Physicochemical characteristics of the water are important for the analysis of drinking water as per WHO and physical parameters that are likely to give rise to complaints from consumers are color, taste, odor and turbidity while low pH causes corrosion and high pH results in taste complaints (Dhote Lina et al(2019).…”
