Soybean root rot is an important disease that has affected soybean crops in recent years, but the available control methods still do not provide good protection for soybeans. In this study, three biodegradable mulch films (HML@CMCS, HML@PVA, HML@CMCS/PVA) were prepared from carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and hymexazol (HML) was loaded on them. The surface and cryofractured surface were compared via micromorphological observations using SEM, AFM, and 3D measurements. Mechanical, water barrier, and optical properties were compared between the different films, and the results showed that the composite film (HML@CMCS/PVA) had better tensile properties, lower water content (35%), and lower water solubility (28%), while water barrier properties were significantly improved. HML@CMCS/PVA also had better light transmission than commercial films (opacity at 600 nm of 1.92). Finally, the composite film was selected to study antifungal properties, soil degradability, and biosafety. The results showed that it exhibited significant inhibitory activity against Fusarium oxysporum and could effectively control soybean root rot, while degradation reached 58% after 7 d of soil burial, and the mortality of earthworms relative to the microplastics produced by the film within 7 d (23.33%) was much lower than that of the commercial film, demonstrating its excellent biosafety. This study provides a new approach for the on-farm management of soybean root rot and the reduction in soil microplastic pollution.

As an important food crop, corn has an important impact on people’s lives. The processing of corn produces many by-products, such as corn gluten meal, corn husk, and corn steep liquor, which are rich in protein, oil, carbohydrates, and other nutrients, all of which are inexpensive. Their accumulation in large quantities during the production process not only results in a burden on the environment but also the loss of potentially valuable food materials that can be processed. In fact, the by-products of corn processing have been partially used in functional foods, nutrients, feed, and other industries. There is no doubt that the secondary utilization of these by-products can not only solve the problem of waste pollution caused by them, but also produce high value-added products and improve the economic benefits of corn. This paper describes in detail the processing and higher-value utilization of the five main by-products: corn gluten meal, corn husks, corn steep liquor, corn germ, and fuel ethanol by-product. The utilization status of corn processing by-products was discussed roundly, and the development trend of corn processing by-products in China and other countries was analyzed, which provided the reference for the development of the corn deep processing industry.

Bionic and active films based on chitosan were developed with the bionic structure of dragonfly wings incorporating pine bark extract (PBE). Physicochemical properties of the films, including thickness, opacity, moisture content, color, mechanical properties, and water vapor permeability were measured. Antioxidant activity of the films was characterized by DPPH free radical scavenging activity. The interaction between chitosan and PBE was explored by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicated that the addition of PBE gave rise to the films greater opacity, redness, and darker appearance. Compared with pure chitosan film, the thickness, opacity, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of the bionic chitosan–PBE film increased, and the water vapor permeability decreased. The films based on chitosan incorporated PBE and with the bionic structure of dragonfly wings can potentially be applied to food packaging.
