Physics and operation oriented activities in preparation of the JT-60SA tokamak exploitation

Abstract: The JT-60SA tokamak, being built under the Broader Approach agreement jointly by Europe and Japan, is due to start operation in 2020 and is expected to give substantial contributions to both ITER and DEMO scenario optimisation. A broad set of preparation activities for an efficient start of the experiments on JT-60SA is being carried out, involving elaboration of the Research Plan, advanced modelling in various domains, feasibility and conception studies of diagnostics and other sub-systems in connection with … Show more

“…One of the key questions is whether the turbulence reduction obtained in JET and AUG is universal or it is just restricted to those tokamaks and ITG-dominated electromagnetic turbulence regimes. Elucidating this question is essential in order to give confidence on the predictions performed for future tokamaks with a significant fast ion fraction, such as ITER or JT-60SA [17]. Therefore, in this paper we analyse a scenario similar to the one analysed in the past: the so-called JET hybrid H-mode scenario, at high β and low core magnetic shear.…”

“…The target plasma analyzed in this study belongs to the JT-60SA plasma operation scenario #4-1, which is called an ITER-like shape inductive scenario [39][40][41] . Hence, the height of the pressure pedestal is adjusted by changing that of the T i pedestal with the assumption that = T T i e .…”

“…JT-60SA is a key milestone in the goal of commercial nuclear fusion energy [1][2][3], anticipating scientific and engineering challenges of ITER [4] and DEMO [5,6] devices. In JT-60SA plasma several ITER and DEMO-like operation scenarios will be tested [7,8]: inductive (standard H-mode) scenarios similar to ITER baseline scenarios, advanced inductive scenarios (high β and low magnetic shear) similar to ITER hybrid scenarios and steady state scenarios mimicking the plasma conditions of a nuclear fusion power plant [9][10][11][12].…”
