Physiologic Specialization of Wheat Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina Eriks.) in theCzech Republic in 2001-2004

Abstract: Abstract:In 2001-2004 virulence of the wheat leaf rust population in the Czech Republic was studied on Thatcher near-isogenic lines with Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr3a, Lr9, Lr10, Lr11, Lr15, Lr17, Lr19, Lr21, Lr23, Lr24, Lr26 and Lr28. Samples of leaf rust (180 in total) were obtained from different parts of the Czech Republic.Resistance genes Lr9 and Lr19 were effective to all tested isolates like in the previous years. Unlike the previous years virulence on Lr24 and Lr28 was observed. Relatively effective wer… Show more

“…Older isolates showed avirulence to a higher number of cultivars than recent isolates. Low virulence of the same older isolates was recorded already earlier (Hanzalová 2010). This situation agrees with the common experience that resistant cultivars "lose" resistance in the course of their prolonged cultivation; i.e.…”

“…In the first test 20 triticale cultivars were 11 tested with selected 8 leaf rust isolates from samples collected in 2008 and described on Table 2. In the second test 15 cultivars were tested with 6 isolates originated from various locations and years from the last century (Hanzalová 2010). They were used because of their ability to differentiate leaf rust resistance genes in wheat cultivars.…”

“…The same was true of France, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania (where only Lr19 was tested) . Virulence to Lr19 was found in the Czech Republic for the first time in 2008 (Hanzalová 2010). Many cultivars released in the 1970s have specific genes for resistance that have not been identified.…”

“…In the last two decades the translocation from Aegilops ventricosa carrying Lr37, Sr38 and Yr17 has been revealed in many cultivars registered in the Czech Republic, namely Apache, Bill, Clever, Corsaire, Rheia, Bakfis, Barryton, Biscay, Nikol, Kodex, Mulan, Orlando, Sultan. Some of these cultivars possess other resistance genes in addition to Lr37 (Hanzalová 2010). Several resistant cultivars grown in the former Czechoslovakia possessed Sr29 (cvs.…”

“…When the near-isogenic lines which possess single Lr-genes were developed they started to be used as differentials among new set of wheat cultivars. Most researchers have replaced the term physiologic race by the term pathotype or phenotype (Kolmer, 2005;Hanzalova and Bartos, 2006). In 1989, a North American System of Nomenclature for Puccinia triticina was proposed.…”
