Physiological and Biochemical Responses in Two Ornamental Shrubs to Drought Stress

Abstract: Drought stress is one of the most important abiotic stress limiting the plant survival and growth in the Mediterranean environment. In this work, two species typically grown in Mediterranean areas with different drought responses were used. Two shrubs, with slow (Photinia × fraseri Dress ‘Red Robin’) or fast (Eugenia uniflora L. ‘Etna Fire’) adaptation ability to drought, were subjected to three water regimes: well-watered (WW), moderate (MD), and severe (SD) drought stress conditions for 30 days. “…The growth reduction of plants, and hence the lower plant biomass, represents the final expression of a number of processes analyzed to determine salt and water stress tolerance [28,32,42]. In our study, in both species, the severe drought stress (20% WC and 10% WC) led in particular to a decrease of the shoot dry biomass.…”

“…Low MDA levels has been correlated with desiccation stress tolerance and the ensuing lipid peroxidation could induce the activity of antioxidant enzymes (Wang et al, 2012). Accumulation of MDA when challenged by environmental stresses has also been found to be a good drought tolerance index in other plant species pitanga (Toscano et al, 2016), melon (Sarabi, et al, 2017), desi chickpea (Farooq et al, 2018) and wheat (Mickky and Aldesuquy, 2016). From all the physiological responses examined, it evident that of finger millet responses to drought stress largely depends on the genotype/cultivars used the length and severity of water deficit stress and the stage of development of the plant.…”

“…It can occur at any plant developmental stage however certain plant growth phase is highly sensitive for soil moisture status that severely hampers the overall crop yield (Toscano et al, 2016). Onion being a shallow rooted crop is highly sensitive to drought stress.…”
