Physiological and Proteomic Responses of Cassava to Short-Term Extreme Cool and Hot Temperature

Abstract: Temperature is one of the most critical factors affecting cassava metabolism and growth. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of short-term exposure to extreme cool (15 °C) and hot (45 °C) temperature on photosynthesis, biochemical and proteomics changes in potted plants of two cassava cultivars, namely Rayong 9 and Kasetsart 50. One-month-old plants were exposed to 15, 30, and 45 °C for 60 min in a temperature chamber under light intensity of 700 μmol m−2 s−1. Compared to the optimum tempera… Show more

“…MDA is a lipid peroxidation product, and its content is used to assess the degree of lipid peroxidation. A low content indicates lower oxidative damage to the plant cell and organelle membranes and enhanced tolerance to low temperature [39]. The MDA content was diminished in all four strains, with Fujian showing the maximum decrease, followed by Xianju, indicating a certain degree of cold resistance (Figure 3B).…”

“…Pemanasan global secara umum memicu perubahan iklim yang berkontribusi negatif pada produksi tanaman (Dulbari et al, 2021;Purwono et al, 2021). Pada tanaman ubi kayu, peningkatan suhu berdampak negatif pada pertumbuhan dan hasil umbi (Santanoo et al, 2022).…”

“…Cassava cultivation is limited by susceptibility to cold temperatures, likely restricting cultivation in distribution the Northern Hemisphere (An et al, 2012;Santanoo et al, 2022 pathways for cold resilience in many plant species begin with the transcriptional induction of homologs of Arabidopsis C-REPEAT BINDING FACTORS (CBF1-3) genes (Barrero-Gil & Salinas, 2018;Thomashow, 2003). In cassava, homology searches support the existence of at least some aspects of this cold-resilience pathway (Fan et al, 2016).…”

“…Cassava cultivation is limited by susceptibility to cold temperatures, likely restricting cultivation in distribution the Northern Hemisphere (An et al., 2012; Santanoo et al., 2022). In the context of rising global temperatures, cultivation of cold‐resilient cassava varieties may become an attractive option for future farming in the global north.…”
