“…Although the broad role of stress and stress mediators in disturbed visceroception is widely appreciated (32)(33)(34), the putative contribution of chronic stress to variations in normal visceroception remains incompletely understood. To fill this research gap, we herein assessed the impact of chronic stress on different dimensions of visceroception induced by rectal distensions by comparing stress subgroups classified based on a validated chronic stress questionnaire.…”

“…PEP captures SNS-mediated effects on cardiac control, which is driven by beta-adrenergic neurotransmission (Larsen, Schneiderman, & Pasin, 1986). PEP is theorized to index behavioral approach, including active coping (Brenner, Beauchaine, & Sylvers, 2005;Kelsey, 2012;Obradović & Boyce, 2012), with greater PEP reactivity (decreases) indicative of heightened reward processing (Richter & Gendolla, 2009) and stress sensitivity (Beauchaine, 2001). Since deficits in reward sensitivity and motivation are strongly implicated in depressive disorders (Whitton, Treadway, & Pizzagalli, 2015), PEP should capture SNS alterations in depression.…”

“…Another common index of SNS arousal that has been more widely studied in the context of anxiety disorders is electrodermal activity (EDA), which reflects activity of the eccrine sweat glands (Dawson, Schell, & Filion, 2007) driven by cholinergic neurotransmission (Fowles, 1986;Shields, MacDowell, Fairchild, & Campbell, 1987). SNS arousal measured by EDA is thought to reflect behavior inhibition and avoidant coping (Dawson et al, 2007;Obradović & Boyce, 2012), which are heavily implicated in anxiety disorders (Hirschfeld, 2001). EDA activity has been consistently associated with threats of punishment and anxiety, supporting higher resting SNS control (for reviews see: Barlow, 2002;Boucsein, 2012;Hoehn-Saric & McLeod, 1988).…”

“…Emotions are not only a key aspect of social cognition and communication, but they also initiate homeostatic physiological and cognitive functions that allow us to survive and thrive via proper detection and response to diverse challenges and opportunities (Shariff and Tracy, 2011;LeDoux, 2012). Emotional experiences are tightly bound to bodily sensations (Pace-Schott et al, 2019) and draw attention to important events such as during physiological need, immediate threat, and social interaction (Damasio and Carvalho, 2013). They coordinate behavior and physiological states during such important events (Stemmler, 2004;Nummenmaa et al, 2014).…”
