Physiological Indicators of Attachment in Domestic Dogs (Canis familiaris) and Their Owners in the Strange Situation Test

Abstract: Behaviorally, attachment is demonstrated when one individual maintains close proximity to another individual and shows distress upon separation. For 29 owner-dog dyads, we employed a modified Ainsworth’s Strange Situation Test (SST) to investigate whether both members would show a physiological reaction to separation. Dogs experienced a series of separation from and reuniting events with their owners and were introduced to a stranger. Before and after the SST, saliva samples were taken from each dyad to measur… Show more

“…On the one hand, companion animals provide companionship, improve mood, and may ease loneliness; human-animal interactions may even improve peer-to-peer social relationships, as well as enhance feelings of respect, trust, and empathy between people (Powell et al, 2018;Beetz et al, 2012;Powell et al, 2019). On the other hand, it has also been shown that stress and poor well-being of owners negatively affect the stress and well-being of their companion animals (Buttner et al, 2015;Sumegi et al, 2014;Ryan et al, 2019). For example, there has been some indication that the stress of the owner could influence their dog's cognitive ability (Sumegi et al, 2014).…”

“…After a modified Ainsworth's strange situation test, salivary CgA is decreased. This was interpreted to mean the process of coming to a novel environment may have actually been more "stressful" or "arousing" than the test itself [39]. The sAA is another representative of SAM activation, and has been investigated in dogs.…”

“…Asimismo, los niveles iniciales de CgA del perro se correlacionaron positivamente con las concentraciones iniciales de cortisol de los propietarios. De este modo, los niveles de estrés del dueño pudieron influenciar los del perro, denotando una sincronización fisiológica debido probablemente a la exposición a un ambiente novedoso donde los perros buscan información a través de sus dueños (Ryan et al, 2019).…”
