Physiopathological aspects of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in the male reproductive system

Abstract: The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway controls several biological processes throughout development and adult life. Dysregulation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling underlies a wide range of pathologies in animals and humans, including cancer in different tissues. In this review, we provide an update of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and the possible roles of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the biology of testis, epididymis and prostate. Data from our laboratory suggest the involvement of 17β-estradiol and estrogen r… Show more

“…It is colocalized with N-cadherin between adjacent Sertoli cells in the seminiferous tubules near the basal and the lower one-third of the adluminal compartments, and also at cell-cell contacts sites between Sertoli cells and spermatocytes in testes of Sprague-Dawley rats 115116. N-cadherin is considered as a structural component of BTB, so the colocalization of β-catenin with N-cadherin at the inter-Sertoli cells contact point suggests that it is also an integral component of BTB 12117118. β-catenin is also an essential component of the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway, which plays important roles in multiple developmental processes including testis development 119120121…”

“…[4][5][6][7] Noncanonical pathway acts through alternative molecules other than β-catenin. 8 Several types of Wnt proteins including 1, 3, 4, 5a and 7a in the testes of fetal and adult rodents and humans have been reported. [9][10][11][12][13] Some components of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway such as Fz9, Nkd1 and β-catenin have been identified in the testis.…”

“…The expression of β-catenin has previously been demonstrated in Sertoli and germ cells in the testis of adult rodents (Lombardi et al, 2013). β-catenin was localized to adherent junction formed between Sertoli cells, and between Sertoli and germ cells at the adluminal compartment of the seminiferous epithelium.…”
