“…Along with that, we also present new insights into the absorption budget and distribution of CDOM and particles in the sampled area. CDOM was significantly correlated to Chl-a suggesting the presence of an autochthonous source of CDOM to the region driven mostly by the phytoplankton community over the shelf domain, generally composed by diatoms (Brandini et al, 2007(Brandini et al, , 2014Bergo et al, 2017;Gonçalves-Araujo et al, 2018a). DOC, on the other hand, was not correlated with salinity and presented high values within the TW, suggesting an input other than the continental runoff within those waters.…”

“…The SBB is a hydrographically dynamic environment with strong seasonality and the presence of mesoscale features as meanders and eddies (Castro, 2014). It sustains a diverse planktonic community encompassing a wide range of autoand heterotrophic organisms from picophytoplankton to microzooplankton (Brandini, 1990;Brandini et al, 2014;Detoni et al, 2016;Bergo et al, 2017;Gonçalves-Araujo et al, 2018a). During the Austral summer expedition CARBOM-3, we analyzed the hydrographic conditions and the OACs along a cross-shelf transect in the poorly sampled SBB.…”

“…The southern region SST is influenced by the fresh waters of the La Plata River (A) plume. During austral spring and summer, the river plume flows northeastward to about 32°S where it broadens offshore, whilst in autumn and winter the plume flows further along‐shelf beyond 28°S (Piola et al., 2000) with colder and low‐salinity signature reaching far north as the southern SBB (de Souza & Robinson, 2004; Gonçalves‐Araujo et al., 2018; Mendonça et al., 2017). These seasonal variations are primarily controlled by the along‐shore wind stress.…”

“…The seasonality is notable but more remarkable is how distant some of the CHL signals can be observed farther downstream or even upstream from some of those rivers. From the La Plata River (A), CHL's annual maximum occurs in the fall months and that signal can be followed up to Cabo de Santa Marta (B) and for some years, up to Cabo Frio (C) as the La Plata Plume (Gonçalves‐Araujo et al., 2018). The Amazon River (G) exports CHL downstream but there is an annual contribution to that coming almost 2000 km from the south.…”
