Phytochemical Constituents of Indonesian Adlay (Coix lacrima-jobi L.) and Their Potential as Antioxidants and Crop Protection Agents

Abstract: Adlay (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) is a cereal crop that has traditionally been used for medicinal purposes. It is processed into nutritious food in China and Southeast Asian countries. This study assesses the phytochemical constituents of this plant and their potential as antioxidants and crop protection agents. The methanolic extracts from seeds of Indonesian adlay (C. lacryma-jobi) varieties including Agrotis, Ma-yuen, and Aquatic, were tested against 2,2-diphnyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethy… Show more

“…We found the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the most potent radical scavenging effect against DPPH free radicals (IC 50 = 18.67 ± 0.61 μ g/mL) as well as TPC (103.50 ± 0.18 mg GAE/g fraction) and TFC contents (410.16 ± 0.47 mg QE/g fraction). These findings are in line with some previous studies that evaluated ethyl acetate extracts in different species, such as Coix lacryma-jobi and Tridax procumbens [ 25 , 27 ]. Generally, ethyl acetate extract contains semipolar compounds, including phenolic and flavonoids, which possess antioxidant properties [ 28 ].…”

“…The chemical constituents of Stevia fractions were determined utilizing a GC-MS system (Agilent 7890B/MSD 5977 A, Agilent Technology, Inc., California, United States) according to the previous report [ 25 ]. A 1 μ L sample was introduced into the HP-5MS column, an Agilent column with 30 meters long, 250 μ m in diameter internally, and 0.25 μ m thick.…”

“…The phytochemical constituents of Citrus EOs were identified by a GC-MS system (Agilent 7890B / MSD 5977 A, Agilent Technology, Inc., Santa Clara, California, United States) following the previous method [22]. Data peak processing was managed the Agilent Chem Station software, incorporating the NIST mass spectral library (Agilent Technology, CA, USA).…”
