The roots of Ligusticum porteri J.M. Coult. & Rose, Apiaceae, are used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. The dimeric phthalide (Z´)-diligustilide found in their organic extracts is associated with the gastroprotective properties. In this study, the gastroprotective effect of nanoemulsion of the volatile oil from the roots of L. porteri (at doses of 1, 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg) in the indomethacin-induced gastric damage model was tested, and nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gastric levels were determinate. The volatile oil obtained by steam distillation (0.63% yield) contained 37 constituents, as assessed by GC-MS analysis, where the significant compounds were 4-phenyl-3-buten-2-ol (20.54%) and (Z)-3-butylidenephthalide (20.54%) that correspond to phthalide monomers. These results demonstrate that nanoemulsion of the volatile oil from L. porteri (at 10 and 30 mg/kg) shows a significant gastroprotective effect (72 and 92% respectively) against indomethacin-induced gastric damage, which is not different from the gastroprotective effect of omeprazole (69%) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, these doses of the nanoemulsion maintain the basal H 2 S gastric levels (209.70 ± 11.50 and 222.0 ± 5.30 nmol/g tissue) even in the presence of indomethacin. From these findings, we concluded that L. porteri volatile oil in nanoemulsion preparation might facilitate the gastroprotective action and it could serve as a future therapeutic approach for NSAID-related gastropathy.

Hibiscus vitifoliusLinn.(syn. Fioria vitifolia (L.) Mattei), is a plant native of India and many other tropical regions. It has been used traditionally for the treatment of a number of diseases. It is also well known for its antioxidant activity. The objective of the present study was to perform a preliminary phytochemical analysis and cytotoxic activity of ethyl acetate extract of Hibiscus vitifolius (Malavaceae) flowers. The finely powdered flowers were extracted successively with petroleum ether, diethyl ether and ethyl acetate in a soxhlet apparatus for 72 h. The ethyl acetate fraction obtained was tested for the phytochemical constituents by using preliminary phytochemical tests. The cytotoxic activity of the extract was screened by MTT (methylthiazolyl diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide) assay against HeLa (Human cervical cancer) cell lines. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds. The extract was shown to inhibit the cell growth with IC50 value of 81.27 µg/mL. These findings suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the flower extracts of Hibiscus vitifolius has moderate cytotoxic activity.

Brachychiton rupestris and Brachychiton luridum are deciduous trees belonging to family Malvaceae. Several members of the genus Brachychiton and its related genus, Sterculia, are used in folk medicine for the treatment of infections. Herein, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the total extracts, n-hexane, dichloromethane as well as the ethyl acetate fractions of the leaves of both species using agar well diffusion method in an effort to better consolidate the scientific basis for their traditional uses. The study was carried out against two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria together with two fungi. The extracts and fractions showed mean inhibition zones diameter in the range of 10.97-14.98 mm with minimum inhibitory concentration values ranging between 39.06 and 625 µg/mL against the susceptible bacteria and fungi. The ethyl acetate fraction of B. luridum exhibited notable activity against Staphylococcus aureus while the total extract showed moderate activity against Salmonella typhi. Regarding B. rupestris, the total extract, n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions showed moderate activity against Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Salmonella typhi, respectively. Other extracts and fractions showed weak or no activity against the tested microorganisms. Qualitative phytochemical screening of both plants was performed to preliminary unveil the classes of secondary metabolites present in the leaves. The results indicated the existence of flavonoids, tannins, sterols, triterpenes, carbohydrates and/or glycosides in both plants.
