Loranthus micranthus Linn. (Loranthaceae) is a botanically significant hemiparasite that grows on tree branches or trunks and is used in traditional medicine. This study compares the antioxidant activity and qualitative phytochemical screening of Nigerian and South Africa Loranthus micranthus Linn. Standard techniques for phytochemical screening were deployed while thin layer chromatography (TLC) bio-autography was utilized to analyze antioxidants qualitatively. Quantitative antioxidant analysis was performed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH); hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) free-radical scavenging; and ferric chloride reducing power. The results of qualitative phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids; glycosides; saponins; phenolic compounds; phlobatannins; tannins; and terpenoids. As for the antioxidant potentials of the four extracts—i.e., Nigerian dichloromethane (NGDCM); South African dichloromethane (SADCM); Nigerian methanol (NGMeOH); and South African methanol (SAMeOH)—the SADCM extract had more creamy bands compared to the Nigerian, thus indicating potentially more antioxidant compounds. A better complementary antioxidant potential was observed for the Nigerian methanol extracts over their South African counterparts. The DPPH quantitative analyses underpin that the SADCM exhibited greater scavenging activity compared to the NGDCM, but this was less than the gallic acid control, with the highest activity at a concentration of 0.2 mg/mL and 0.4 mg/mL, respectively. However, as the concentration increased from 0.6 to 1.0 mg/mL, the SADCM again dominated in its antioxidant potential over all the analytes. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values obtained were [SADCM = 0.31 mg/mL, NGDCM = 0.51 mg/mL, SAMeOH = 0.51 mg/mL, NGMeO = 0.17, gallic acid = 1.17 mg/mL, and BHT = 1.47 Mg/mL)]. Both the H2O2 scavenging and the Fe3+ to Fe2+ reduction assays mirrored a similar trend in the antioxidant potentials of all the analytes except for the BHT, which performed better in the ferric chloride reduction assay at a concentration of 0.2–06 mg/mL. Based on the facts gathered, it can be inferred that the South African and Nigerian Loranthus micranthus Linn. are chemically equivalent. This is in support of their similar morphology and taxonomical classification, notwithstanding the environmental, biological, and edaphic impacts experienced by each plant.

Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activity of Endophytic Fungi Isolated from The Leaves of Sungkai (Peronema canescens)

Sungkai (Peronema canescens) is a medicinal plant widely used in Indonesia. Its leaves are believed to have the potential to treat fever and boost the immune system. This study investigated the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of endophytic fungi extracts obtained from Sungkai leaves. This will provide basic information for developing the potential of natural ingredients as antioxidants and antibacterials. Endophytic fungi residing in Sungkai leaves were identified morphologically. The antioxidant test was completed using DPPH, while the antibacterial activity was tested using the paper disk diffusion method. Most potential endophytic fungal isolates were identified through molecular identification, and the isolation of a bioactive compound was achieved using column chromatography. The structure of the compound was determined using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy methods. Four endophytic fungi isolates were observed in the Sungkai leaves (code RND1–RND4). RND3 demonstrated very strong antioxidant activity (IC50 < 20 µg/mL) and strong antibacterial activity. Based on the molecular test, RND3 was identified as Aspergillus niger. The pure compound isolated from RND3 revealed weak and strong antioxidant (IC50 > 500 µg/mL) and antibacterial (MIC ≤ 64 µg/mL) properties, respectively. Spectroscopic analysis showed that compound 1 was 3-benzyl-2,6-dihydroxy-1,4,11,13-tetramethyl-5- methylene-12,15-dioxo-14-oxabicycloheptadeca-8,16-diene-7-carboxylic acid. Through further research, this study can be used as a basis for the development of compounds as raw materials for drugs.

Biodiversitas 24: 603-608. The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Annona atemoya seeds crude alcoholic extract utilizing nine different concentrations (0.0020, 0.0039, 0.0060, 0.0080, and 0.00100 mg/ml). Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall disease in numerous plant crops causing significant economic losses. Medicinal plants contain chemical compounds (a group of secondary metabolites) known to have antibacterial properties. The result showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration was (0.0313 mg/ml) using agar diffusion technique, while it ranged from (0.0156-0.0313 mg/ml) in the minimal microplate inhibitory concentration test. The crude alcoholic extract of A. atemoya seeds contains alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, phenols, and proteins, but not saponins, based on the results of qualitative analysis of chemical components. HPLC analysis revealed that the extract contained quercitin, rutin, valine, and camphor which were found in the amount of 33.09, 139.39, 0.061, and 7.43 ppm/ml, respectively. Therefore the present finding suggests that A. atemoya seed extract may be used as a biological control to inhibit crown gall formation in plants. This is the first study of the antimicrobial activity of A. atemoya seed alcoholic extract on the growth of plant pathogenic bacteria.
