Medicinal plants played an important role in traditional medicine for the treatment of diseases since antiquities. The aim of the study is to carry out an ethnobotanical survey on medicinal plants used traditionally in cancer treatment in the region of Greater Casablanca-Morocco, and to enhance the traditional herbal medicine knowledge. 110 traditional healers in the study area were interviewed face to face to response a survey questionnaire including the names of plants used in cancer treatment, used parts, methods of preparation, and route of administration. Indices of Fidelity Level (FL), Use Value (UV), and Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) were calculated to identify the most effective plants used for cancer treatment. Eight species were specified including Aristolochia baetica, Aristolochia paucinervis, Bryonia dioica, Aquilaria malaccensis, Marrubium vulgare, Lavandula maroccana, Ephedra alata, and Euphorbia resinifera belonging to 7 families. Aristolochiaceae, Aquilariaceae, and Cucurbitaceae were the most useful families in cancer treatment with high significant indices of UV, FL, and RFC with values of 1, 100%, and 1, respectively. Roots and leaves were the most commonly used plant parts. Decoction and powder mixed with honey were the frequently used method for remedies preparation. The present study showed that the people living in Morocco's economic capital are still highly dependent on traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of cancer. Therefore, it seems that herbal medicine still plays a crucial role in the primary healthcare system for the local population. During this survey, it was reported that even some plant families are highly toxic for humans like Aristolochiaceae that are frequently used in cancer treatment in the study area. As many people still rely on natural traditional medicine considering (it is safe with no side effects), so combined effort between all social categories including scientists and traditional healers should be established for involving the scientific validity of the used plants in the treatment of diseases.

Background External infections involving the skin and wound are the most frequent complications affecting humans and animals. Medicinal plants play great roles in the treatment of skin and wound infections. This study was aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of crude methanolic extracts of nine medicinal plants. Methods Agar well diffusion and broth dilution methods were used to determine the antibacterial activity of nine Ethiopian plants against four bacterial species including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Results Among the tested plants, seven (Cissus quadrangularis, Commelina benghalensis, Euphorbia heterophylla, Euphorbia prostrate, Momordica schimperiana, Trianthema spp., and Solanum incanum) were found to exhibit considerable antibacterial activity against at least one of the test bacteria. The extracts of C. quadrangularis, E. heterophylla, and E. prostrata had a wide spectrum of antibacterial activities against test bacterial strains while the extracts of Grewia villosa and Schinus molle did not show any inhibitory activity. Clinical isolate and laboratory strain of S. aureus showed the highest susceptibility to highest concentration (780 mg/mL) of E. prostrata with a zone of inhibition of 21.0mm and 22.3mm, respectively. Conclusion This study indicates clear evidence supporting the traditional use of seven plants in treating skin and wound infections related to bacteria.

Euphorbia heterophylla est une herbe envahissante dans la région nord de la Côte d’Ivoire. Elle est connue par les éleveurs, les agriculteurs et les herboristes. Le but de ce travail est d’identifier les différents usages de cette plante. À cet effet, une enquête ethnobotanique basée sur la méthode d'échantillonnage stratifiée probabiliste a été menée dans les régions du Poro, de la Bagoué et du Tchologo. En élevage, Euphorbia heterophylla est utilisée comme fourrage pour le lapin (46,5 %), le cobaye (34,9 %) et le porc (18,6 %). Chez les Hommes, elle est utilisée pour favoriser la production de lait maternel chez la femme (28,6 %), le traitement des plaies (25,7 %), les infections gastriques (25,70 %), l’amélioration de la qualité du sperme (11,4 %) et le traitement des rougeurs des bébés (8,6 %). Ces résultats peuvent constituer une source d’informations non négligeables pour les recherches scientifiques sur Euphorbia heterophylla et la domestication. Euphorbia heterophylla is an invasive plant in the northern region of Côte d'Ivoire. It is known by breeders, farmers, and herbalists. The aim of this work is to identify the different uses of this plant. To this end, an ethnobotanical survey based on the stratified probability sampling method was conducted in the Poro, Bagoué, and Tchologo regions. In breeding, Euphorbia heterophylla is used as fodder for rabbits (46.5%), guinea pigs (34.9%), and pigs (18.6%). In men, it is used for the production of breast milk in women (28.6%), the treatment of wounds (25.7%), gastric infections (25.70%), the improvement of the quality semen (11.4%), and the treatment of rashes in babies (8.6%). These results could constitute a significant source of information for scientific research on Euphorbia heterophylla domestication.
