Phytochemical Screening of Medicinal Plants and Study of the Effect of Phytoconstituents in Seed Germination

Abstract: Phytochemical screening of ten different locally available plant parts was done in methanol extract. Tannin, quinine, terpenoid, flavonoid, steroid, alkaloid, cardiac glycoside, glycoside, volatile oils, etc were the phytoconstituents found in plants. The study of the effect of phytoconstituents in the germination of Pisum sativum seeds revealed that the phytoconstituents present in plant extracts showed the cytotoxic effect in living cells i.e. in germinating Pisum sativum seeds. The phytoconstituents present… Show more

“…Flavonoids have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities; hence, they attribute to the medicinal properties of different medicinal plants [ 43 ]. For instance, plants like Zingiber , Curcuma , and Acorus were reported as sources of antibacterial and antiseptic agents owing to their flavonoid content [ 47 ]. Tannins were described as healing agents for inflammation, hemorrhoids, and gonorrhea [ 42 ] and were known to have anticancer [ 47 ] and antidiabetic [ 48 ] effects.…”

“…Due to their actions on the cells and tissues in live animals' bodies, phytochemicals exhibit certain biological activities and are beneficial to human health (Lawati and Parajuli, 2021). Phytochemicals help plants develop, protect them by triggering defence mechanisms, and give them colour, flavour, and odour (Sharma et al, 2020). Phytochemicals, made of natural materials and their derivatives are more efficient than their synthetic counterparts and cause fewer side effects (Essiett and Bassey, 2013).…”
