Phytochemicals in fruits of Hawaiian wild cranberry relatives

Abstract: Berries of V. reticulatum and V. calycinum could serve as a rich dietary source of PACs, comparable to or greater than cranberries. These finding suggest that Hawaiian Vaccinium berries could be a functional food. Additional examination of the phytochemicals in other wild Vaccinium species is warranted.

“…Cranberry is rich in antioxidants and polyphenolics that have strong antimicrobial activities and other health benefits [ 8 , 15 , 36 ]. As a Hawaiian wild relative of cranberry, ohelo berry has comparable or even higher phenolic contents than cranberry [ 18 ]. In this study, the total phenolics and anthocyanins in ohelo berry juice were 4.2 mg/mL GAE and 55.11 mg/L cyd-3-glu, respectively.…”

“…The anthocyanins in cranberry juice were in a range of 0.9 to 1.4 mg/100 mL cyd-3-glu and depends on quantification methods [ 21 , 39 ]. Ohelo berry juice has a pH of 3.27, higher than that of cranberry juice (2.70) [ 18 ]. The sugar and titratable acidity ratio of ohelo berry juice was 7.6/1.42 Bx/acid, which was comparable to the results of the phytochemical composition analysis of ohelo berry juice previously [ 18 ].…”

“…Unfortunately, DMAC provides a rough estimation of the total flavanols, but specific A-type PAC data cannot be obtained by single spectrophotometric analysis (Wallace et al 2010;Granato et al 2016;Van Dooren et al 2018;Ma et al 2019). As a result, separation techniques such as liquid chromatography may be required to discriminate among A-and B-type compounds (Hummer et al 2014;Lu et al 2017;Van Dooren et al 2018;Bakhytkyzy et al 2018;Bakhytkyzy et al 2019). Besides, DMAC has also been used as a staining reagent to develop thin-layer chromatograms of flavanol mixtures (Glavnik et al 2009;Glavnik et al 2011).…”
