The Island of Borneo (also known as Kalimantan), Indonesia has extensive forests overgrown with various plants. Some of them have been believed for generations and empirically have efficacy as traditional medicines. It is estimated that more than 200 medicinal plants are growing in the forests of Borneo Island. Some of them had been studied to have a number of secondary metabolites that act as anticancer, such as Bawang Dayak/Bawang Tiwai (Dayak/Tiwai Onion), Tahongai, Tanaman Sarang Semut (Ant Nest Plant), Batang Kuning (Yellow Stem)/Akar Kuning (Yellow Root), and Pasak Bumi/Tongkat Ali. Meanwhile, some of them still need to be investigated further regarding the secondary metabolites of their plant parts and their properties as herbal medicines, especially as anti-cancer, such as Sengkubak, Kayu Bajakah (Bajakah Wood), and Jahe Balikpapan (Balikpapan Ginger).Keyword: Anti-Cancer, Secondary Metabolites, Herbal Medicines, Borneo Endemic Plants

Tumbuhan obat Sarang semut atau simbagh utak (Hydnophytum formicarum) banyak ditemukan didaerah Bengkulu selatan provinsi Bengkulu. Umbi simbagh utak (H. formicarum) secara empiris dapat mengobati sakit kepala, memar dan pegal-pegal. H. formicarum juga memiliki aktivitas sitotoksik, antioksidan dan antibakteri. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui aktivitas antidiabetes ekstrak etanol tumbuhan obat simbagh utak (H. formicarum) terhadap hewan uji mencit yang telah diinduksi aloksan, dan Uji Fitokimia untuk mengetahui kandungan metabolit sekunder yang terdapat pada ekstrak. Ekstrak diperoleh dengan cara maserasi dengan merendam serbuk simbagh utak (H. formicarum) dengan pelarut etanol 96%. Pelarut yang terdapat pada larutan ekstrak etanol simbagh utak (H. formicarum) diuapkan menggunakan rotary evaporator sehingga diperoleh ekstrak etanol simbagh utak (H.formicarum) Selanjutnya ekstrak etanol simbagh utak (H.formicarum) diuji terhadap hewan uji mencit yang telah diinduksi aloksan. Hasil penelitan menunjukkan bahwa setelah dilakukan uji statistik anova dan T-student dapat dinyatakan bahwa ekstrak umbi tumbuhan Simbagh Utak (H. formicarum) terlihat sangat signifikan dapat menurunkan kadar gula darah mencit (Mus musculus) jantan yang telah diinduksi aloksan pada dosis 0,7056 g/kg BB, dan ekstrak umbi H. formicarum mengandung senyawa golongan flavonoid dan fenolik. Senyawa flavonoid dan fenolik dapat bertindak sebagai penangkap radikal bebas. Kata Kunci: Serang semut, Uji fitokimia, metabolit sekuder, antidiabetes.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a critical, life-threatening condition marked by severe inflammation and impaired lung function. Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) present a promising therapeutic avenue due to their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative capabilities. This review comprehensively evaluates MSC-based strategies for ARDS treatment, including direct administration, tissue engineering, extracellular vesicles (EVs), nanoparticles, natural products, artificial intelligence (AI), gene modification, and MSC preconditioning. Direct MSC administration has demonstrated therapeutic potential but necessitates optimization to overcome challenges related to effective cell delivery, homing, and integration into damaged lung tissue. Tissue engineering methods, such as 3D-printed scaffolds and MSC sheets, enhance MSC survival and functionality within lung tissue. EVs and MSC-derived nanoparticles offer scalable and safer alternatives to cell-based therapies. Likewise, natural products and bioactive compounds derived from plants can augment MSC function and resilience, offering complementary strategies to enhance therapeutic outcomes. In addition, AI technologies could aid in optimizing MSC delivery and dosing, and gene editing tools like CRISPR/Cas9 allow precise modification of MSCs to enhance their therapeutic properties and target specific ARDS mechanisms. Preconditioning MSCs with hypoxia, growth factors, or pharmacological agents further enhances their therapeutic potential. While MSC therapies hold significant promise for ARDS, extensive research and clinical trials are essential to determine optimal protocols and ensure long-term safety and effectiveness.
