Phytofabrication and characterization of Alchornea cordifolia silver nanoparticles and evaluation of antiplasmodial, hemocompatibility and larvicidal potential

Abstract: Purpose: The recent emergence of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) parasites resistant to current artemisinin-based combination therapies in Africa justifies the need to develop new strategies for successful malaria control. We synthesized, characterized and evaluated medical applications of optimized silver nanoparticles using Alchornea cordifolia (AC-AgNPs), a plant largely used in African and Asian traditional medicine. Methods: Fresh leaves of A. cordifolia were used to prepare aqueous crude extract, which was mix… Show more

“…Biologically synthesized AgNPs using the leaf extract of Alchornea cordifolia were of size 11.77 ± 5.57 nm, spheroidal, and polycrystalline, and they showed high levels of antiplasmodial activity against 3D7 and RKL9 Plasmodium falciparum strains. This was due to their small size and high surface area to volume ratio, which facilitates their potential to penetrate cell membranes ( Kojom Foko et al, 2023 ). According to the findings of one study, the crude extracts of Azadirachta indica exhibited dose-dependent antiplasmodial activity ( Hawadak et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Exposure to Ag NPs synthesized with Alchornea cordifolia leaf extract triggered behavioral and morphological changes in larvae, with reduced swimming [ 109 ]. L. siceraria ZnO NPs caused the loss of body hair, the decomposition of the outer cuticle’s epithelial layer, and the disintegration of abdominal structures and midgut on A. stephensi third instar larvae [ 99 ].…”

“…Moreover, artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) effectively treats mild malaria by targeting molecular markers and studying resistance genetics for improved results [146]. On this basis, Foko et al [89] optimized and characterized the green synthesis of Ag-NPs using A. cordifolia leaves for potential medical uses. These polycrystalline, stable spheres showed strong antiplasmodial action against P. falciparum strains, making them safe for blood use.…”
