“…In a natural system, pH is primarily determined by the concentration of alkali metals in the ionic forms (Na + , K + , Cl − ) with higher concentrations resulting in higher pH (Hinga 2002). The pH pattern observed in the present investigation was quite similar to the findings of Choudhury and Pal (2010), but a high pH value of 8.06 was observed in the present study, whereas the maximum pH value of 7.6 was reported along the Digha coastal waters by Choudhury and Pal (2010). Lower pH values observed in the monsoon season may be due to the heavy rainfall and land runoff (Gopalan et al 1987;Nair et al 1988).…”

“…SST is an important physical characteristic of coastal waters as it decides the solubility of gases and salts and regulates the growth of plants and animals (Jansi 2004) and would be significantly influenced by atmospheric temperature in the study area. This is quite evident from the observations of Choudhury and Pal (2010), where the water temperature reached a maximum value of 30°C in the months of July and August in the coastal waters of Digha. The monsoon season in the coast of West Bengal has a period of 4 months starting from June to September (Choudhury and Pal 2010).…”

“…Data not shown Bay of Bangal, Indian [7] was not limited. Even among the same genus, such as C. atomus and C. meneghiniana, S. hantzschii, and S. minutulus, diatoms expressed different nutrient strategies to cope with P i -limited conditions.…”

“…Eurythermal and euryhaline nature of diatoms in all the three season leads to their dominance [32] and have been observed to bloom regularly along the Indian Coast during June to October [33,34]. Dominance of diatom over dinoflagellates coincides to the report from Indian coastal water [35][36][37] and world oceans [38,39]. A cosmopolitan genus such as Chaetoceros was dominant with 15 species followed by other major genera such as Coscinodiscus (6 species), Nitzschia (3 species) and Rhizosolenia (4 species) in this study.…”
