In the past two decades, freshwater bodies and their water quality have deteriorated rapidly due to several natural and anthropogenic causes, as well as rapid urbanization and industrialization. Using environmental assessment tools, eight sampling stations were used to assess the water quality of the upper Ganga and its major headstreams between January 2019 and December 2021 and to assess the impact of human-led activities on the environment and the suitability of the catchment basin to perpetuate aquatic ecological diversity. During the current study period, water quality indices such as the Water Quality Index (WQI), Nemerow Pollution Index (NPI), and the Overall index of pollution (OIP) were employed to assess water quality. Twelve physicochemical parameters were examined using appropriate techniques and then compared to international standards. A small increase was observed in some physicochemical parameters, such as pH, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, and Biological Oxygen Demand, at sampling stations 7 and 8. In the upper Ganga basin, all three indices (WQI, NPI, and OIP) accurately recorded numerous natural and human events at the selected sample sites. Several natural and anthropogenic activities, as well as rapid urbanization and industrialization, have caused freshwater bodies and their water quality to deteriorate rapidly over the past two decades. This study utilizes ArcGIS to map water quality parameters in the Baner and Gaj rivulets, tributaries of the river Beas in Himachal Pradesh, with the objective of gaining insights into their potential impact on the main river. So, the main aim of the present research was to assess the impact of anthropogenic actions on the ecology and the fitness of the rivulets basin to perpetuate freshwater diversity. A total of six sampling zones were selected; three sampling zones on Baner and three sampling zones on Gaj rivulets, in order to assess the water quality during the period of one year, from January 2022 to December 2022. During the present study, the Water Quality Index (WQI) was used to assess the status of water quality in both rivulets. Fourteen physicochemical parameters were examined using appropriate techniques and then compared to international standards. A slight upsurge was observed in some physicochemical parameters, such as pH, hardness, TDS, nitrate, and phosphate, at sampling zone 3 (S3) of the Baner rivulet. The results of WQI ranged from 45.5 at S1 to 50.2 at S3 in Gaj and 48.5 at S1 to 55.2 at S3 in Baner, which reflected a slight impact of natural and anthropogenic activities. The status of the water quality in both rivulets confirmed the abundance of aquatic species. Human activities, such as riverbed mining, also negatively impacted the water quality at some sample zones. There is, however, a need to monitor and evaluate these types of activities. However, further research and monitoring are necessary to validate the study's findings and extend its scope to other regions.

Bioindicators have become increasingly popular and have contributed significant amounts of useful information to the process of managing water resources. The ability of a species (or species assemblage) to adapt to a certain range of chemical, physical, and biological conditions is one criterion that can be used to assess the quality of its surrounding environment. Planktons that react quickly to changes in their environment have proven to be particularly valuable, and the identification of certain indicator species has become increasingly common in the process of determining the quality of the water. The “health” of an aquatic system can be inferred from the presence or absence of plankton, which act as early warning signals. When compared with the expense of assessing harmful contaminants, the overall cost of conducting routine monitoring of biological communities is far lower and has a higher degree of reliability. The ability of bioindicators to identify indirect biotic effects of pollutants, which is something that many physical or chemical tests are unable to do, is another advantage of using bioindicators. Different aquatic species as bioindicators tolerate different environmental conditions, and their different tolerances to particular environments help in identifying a particular environmental condition. Phytoplankton species like Euglena viridis, Oscillatoria limosa, Nitzschia palea, and Scenedesmus quadricauda, and zooplankton species like Branchionus sp., Molina sp., Keratella cochlearis, Daphnia sp., and Cyclopus sp. indicate water pollution. This review's objective is to highlight some recent research on planktons, focusing on their capabilities and opportunities for application as bioindicators of water quality.
