Phytotoxicity of spinach by cadmium in different textured soils amended with organic matter

Abstract

A green house lysimeter experiment was conducted to determine the toxicity and uptake of Cd by spinach in Silt loam, sandy loam and clay loam soils with and without organic matter. Three level of Cd was applied i.e 3, 10 and 50 mgKg -1 of soil , there was a control with each treatment. On maturity the crop was harvested. Then soil samples were taken for fractionation scheme. Concentration of metal in spinach was increased with increasing rate of metal application. Application of organic matter increased the dry matter yield of spinach while reduced the uptake of metal by spinach. The uptake was maximum in sandy loam soil followed by silt loam and was least in silty clay loam. The Fractionation patron showed that distribution of metal in three type soil was different. The highest fraction was carbonate bound fraction in all types of soil.
