Pick Up a Book or “Google It?” A Survey of Radiologist and Trainee-Preferred References and Resources

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate radiologist and trainee-preferred sources for solving imaging questions. The institutional review board determined this study to be exempt from informed consent requirements. Web-based surveys were distributed to radiology staff and trainees at 16 academic institutions. Surveys queried ownership and use of tablet computers and habits of utilization of various electronic and hardcopy resources for general reference. For investigating specific cases, respondents ident… Show more

“…Using a previously described mixed integer linear programming approach [53,54], 1000 alternative optimal FBA solutions were identified under each condition. The flux through the transhydrogenase reaction, and thus the amount of NADPH predicted to be required, under each condition was averaged over the 1000 alternative optimal solutions and this average was used as an estimate of NADPH demand under those conditions.…”

“…It is well recognized that the learning strategies and preferred educational resources relied upon by resident trainees have dramatically changed over time. Radiology resident trainees have rapidly shifted their reliance upon textbooks and journals to Web-based educational resources and other materials easily and freely accessible through the Internet via personal electronic devices and modern PACS workstations [4][5][6][7].…”

“…Currently, programs fulfill ACGME requirements through a mix of traditional in-person lectures and interactive casebased conferences. Multiple studies have documented that millennials often prefer Web-based and E-learning resources over traditional methods and some have proposed eliminating in-person traditional lectures for medical education and adopting a flipped classroom model, with resources such as digital lectures employed to facilitate and enable self-directed independent learning, allowing for in-person "class-time" to be used for case-based interactive sessions [4][5][6][7].…”

“…In fact, clinician use of online medical curricula has grown exponentially in the last decade. Statistics indicate that over 90% of medical students and health care professionals regularly use Internet‐based resources . Based on current trends, it is highly likely that open‐source materials may be the most widely accessed type of medical references in the next decade.…”

To our knowledge, this is the first international collaborative to deliver a peer-reviewed education program with the aim of enhancing home HD delivery.…”
